WELCOME TO
WATER POLO
2008

A message
from the Booster Club President:
Dear Players and Parents,
Welcome to our first edition of the Screaming Eagle water polo guide. I would like to express my thanks to Virginia Daley, Lu Shuey and Sherry Deckman for putting this important orientation tool together.
CV Water Polo has a very distinguished past and we are very proud of our athletes’ accomplishments in and out of the pool. We are very grateful to have Corey Pelow and Sheri Johnson, our dedicated coaches.
This guide will help educate and inform members of our booster club with pertinent information to keep you “in the know” for the upcoming season. Keep this booklet in a handy location throughout the season for referral.
New for 2008 is the additional functionality of our website, www.cvwaterpolo.org. Now you will receive an e-mail notice directing you to the website for the details. We suggest you regularly refer to the website for coaches’ notices and other news.
CVWP Booster Club is a successful volunteer organization that relies on member involvement. I would like to thank everyone for your tireless efforts that help to make our programs successful.
Best of luck to our athletes and coaching staff, we look forward to an action packed season.
GO CV EAGLES!!!

Coaches
Message
Welcome to the Cumberland
Valley Water Polo family. As a coach, it is my mission to make CV
the best program it can be. This can only be done with the dedication
from all our coaches, athletes and family members. When a team achieves
success, every member of the program achieves success. There are many
facets of success as a program, student, athlete and as an individual.
This is always our goal and we hope this success carries with our athletes
through their lives. We thank you deeply for all the dedication, time and
effort you will be putting in to make our program successful.
For those of you who are new players to the program,
you will find water polo to be a challenging and rewarding experience. Parents, although the game of water polo is
confusing at first, it is fast-paced and exciting. You will have the support of veteran parents
and make new friends.
Again we welcome you into our family and thank you
for all your support.
Best of luck, Coach Corey and Coach Sheri

Touch of the Valley
Once again this year, the
Water Polo Booster Club will participate in Touch of the Valley, an auction and food tasting event held at the
Cumberland Valley High School (CVHS) on Saturday, November 15, 2008. This has
been a tasty, fun, and profitable fund raiser. The event is held in the CVHS
cafeteria and the Eagle Lobby. Area restaurants showcase their best dishes from
appetizers, to entrees, and of course deserts.
Touch of the Valley is
sponsored by the Eagle Foundation. Funds raised benefit both the Eagle
Foundation and participating CVHS clubs and organizations. The proceeds
from ticket sales go to the Eagle Foundation. The Booster Club is required to
sell 25 tickets, so please purchase your tickets from the Booster Club (not the
Eagle Foundation). Make your check payable to “CV Water Polo Boosters Club” and
enjoy the event.
All auction proceeds go
directly to the clubs that offer items for auction. Therefore, we need the parents’ help with donations of items or
collection of donations to be auctioned. Items can be donated by friends,
neighbors, relatives, and businesses. It also can be a good way for a business
to advertise by auctioning services or items. Ideas may include meals at a
restaurant, haircuts, vacation rentals, or home repair services.
Another option is to donate
items for a basket. The Booster Club is assembling at least two baskets this
year. We had great success with our wine basket the last two years, so we're going to do it
again. You can donate any wine related items such as corkscrews, wine
glasses, bottle(s) of wine and we'll assemble the items in a big basket to be
auctioned. We're also planning a Christmas basket. You can donate anything Christmas - ornaments,
lights, cards, coffee mugs, etc. Please provide an estimated value to help us
set the minimum bids.
We'll follow up with more
information and reminders as the date gets closer, but mark your calendars now
for November
15, 2008 and start thinking
about auction items.

Understanding the Game of Water Polo
Water Polo can be a confusing game for spectators. The whistle is constantly blowing and the play never stops, even when someone is ejected for a penalty. In addition, there are many misconceptions about the game, including how the players keep their horses swimming. Well hang in there, because the following information should help to make the picture much clearer.
1. Each team has six field players and a goalie.
2. Field players can only use one hand to touch the ball, goalies two.
3. Games consist of 7-minute quarters for Varsity and 12 minute (clock running) halves for JV.
4. The object of the game is to score by placing the ball completely in the goal. Players may move the ball by swimming or passing.
5. Teams may substitute after a goal is scored, during a time-out or during the play from the ejection area.
6. Each team receives three time-outs and one 20-second time-out per game.
7. Shots blocked out of bounds by defensive players result in the defensive team receiving possession. If a defender uses two hands to block a shot, the offensive team received a penalty shot.
FOULS: When an infraction of the rules occurs, the referee will point in the direction of the team taking possession, while blowing his whistle. The ball is put back into play (free throw) giving the player 3-seconds of free time to throw the ball to another teammate or swim it up the pool. A player cannot shoot his free throw unless he outside the 5-meter line. Example of Ordinary Foul: A defender may reach over an opponent’s back to get at the ball while facing away from the goal. The penalty for an ordinary foul is a free throw for the opposing team. Major Fouls: When a defender fouls an opponent too aggressively, or from behind when the opponent is facing the goal, the defender is ejected for 20 seconds (players may reenter the game if their team recovers the ball before the ejection time is up, or if the opposing team scores). Players may only receive 3-major fouls before elimination. If all of this has you totally confused, just sit back and enjoy the game. The easiest way to follow the play is by watching the scoreboard. If your team is ahead at the end, great! If not, well consider that you have expanded your horizons. When the game is over, you can at least explain to your friends that the horses never get wet.
The following are some Water Polo Leagues that your
child may be involved with:
PA Water Polo
This is a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA)
recognized sport. Our rules and
regulations are governed by the PA Water Polo Coaches Association, the PIAA,
NCAA and the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA). The majority of our timeline is governed by
the PIAA. We begin our scholastic season
in August and end in November.
There are numerous water polo opportunities all year long. The following opportunities are some that are
offered local, statewide and nationally.
Age Group Levels are offered for all the following.
CV High School Water Polo

practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays and lifts weights on Mondays and
Wednesdays. A small fee is involved and

American Water Polo (and Upper Main Line League),
USA Water Polo and American Water Polo are the two main governing water
polo bodies in the
….National opportunities are available every year through USA Water Polo
as well as regional opportunities through the North East Zone teams. The NE Zone team members are picked every
spring through a series of tryouts. The
best members of the North East Zone then make the Zone Team and go on to
compete in national competitions against other Zone Teams at various locations
across the United States.

The Premier

the East Coast regions. This opportunity

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
The
team is planning to attend Pepperdine University Water Polo Camp in June of
2009. There will be various fundraising
activities throughout the year to offset the cost of this camp.
CONCESSION STAND RESPONSIBILITIES
A concession stand will be provided at all home polo
games and home tournaments throughout the 2008 season. CV parents are responsible for food donations
and operation of the concession stand.
Since profits from these concessions are a major part of our team’s
fund-raising efforts, we need every family’s help to make this a successful
endeavor.
How Can Parents Help?
Each class will be assigned a date of a home game at
which they will be responsible for hosting the concession stand. Parents of
team members in that class will be expected to provide a food donation and to
volunteer to work a shift at the concession stand. Class representatives will contact parents
with a list of needed food donations and a schedule of volunteer time slots for
the game.
Parents will also be expected to provide a food donation and volunteer to work at least
one shift at the concession stand during all
home tournaments. CV will be hosting
the following tournaments during the 2008 season:
Screaming
Eagle Tournament - September 5-6
Beast of the East Tournament - September 26-27
East/West
Crossover Tournament – October 10-11
Women’s
State Tournament - October 31 - November1
Please mark these important dates on your
calendar. If you are unable to help at
any of these tournaments, you are expected to find a substitute to fulfill your
commitment and/or trade duties for another date.
Thank you in advance for your support!
