CV Girls Water Polo State Champs - October 30, 2007
Cumberland Valley defeated Souderton 12-11 in overtime Saturday night to claim its first Water Polo State Championship since
2003. After a regular season that saw the Lady Eagles sputter to some early losses and untimely injuries, CV played its best
polo during the tournament with wins over North Allegheny (16-2), Governor Mifflin (9-7), and #2 seed Wilson (14-11) in the
semi-finals. The tense give and take semi-final victory over Wilson avenged two earlier season losses to the Bulldogs as Callan
Rowe powered her way to seven goals. Fellow seniors Amanda Skonezney (3 goals) and Kristin Slovenkay (2 goals) led the outside
game while Jess Fedish and Molly Podgurski chipped in a goal apiece.
The championship game saw CV take several two and three goals leads with Souderton fighting back to tie it each time. Skonezney
again put CV ahead by two in the first overtime period with a half pool shot at the buzzer and the Eagles held on in the second
stanza to secure its 12th overall state title. Rowe and Skonezney led the scoring with 5 and 3 goals respectively while Kaitlyn
Knott and Slovenkay added two each. Sophomore goalie Mackenzie Ferry had a fine tournament with 34 saves.
Head Coach Sheri Johnson, in just her second season was obviously pleased with the results. "I can't say enough how well
the girls played. We knew coming into States that it would be tough to run the table but at the same time knew we were more
than capable if we played up to our potential. Wilson and Souderton are both tough teams and to get by both in the same day in
unbelievable. For our Seniors to go out on a winning note is exciting because they have worked hard to achieve this, plus it
will give our underclassman a kick start for next year."
CV's success led to 1st Team All State berths for Callan Rowe and
Amanda Skonezney. Kaitlyn Knott and Kristin Slovenkay made the 2nd and 3rd Teams respectively while Molly Podgurski and goalie
Mackenzie Ferry received Honorable Mention nods.
